Jacqueline Floyd: Close-reading.

For my close reading I am thinking about using Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina . I found the reading compelling and fascinating. I realized that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. And I found that Fatomina sacrifice a lot to get what she wanted and that was love. She also wanted to prove a point that she can do as the man and not be ashamed of her actions. Reading the story you realized that woman can be just as clever as man. There was no shame in her actions and she indulged in all her many disguise to achieve her goals. I intend to write a personal story of my own and combined it with Fantomina’s story.

I would not do the things that Fantomina did to achieve love but one never knows. If you were living in that time and saw all the men getting away behavior which seems new to you. And you are told or assume if you did it you be look down on, what would you do? There are other things that men do that come off a being a man. But when a women does it , they are look down on by society. One part of the story that I believe got the story in motion is when Fantomina saw the behavior of the men and set out to achieve her goals. ” She no sooner design’d this frolic, than she put it in execution: and muffling her hoods over her face, went the next night in the gallery-box and practising as much as she observed at that distance, the behavior of that woman , what not long before she found her disguise had answered the ends she wore it for.” This part of the story was the catalyst for Fantomina ‘s journey. It cover the over all text and move the story along.
