“David Hume’s Political Essays” demonstrates that the topics that he presents within his essays can be idealized in our modern century. It’s ironic, in a sense. Hume is aware that labor costs money for the economy and sometimes it is unfair and in his words, “a violent method” (136). Which, is true. Not physically violent, per se, but mentally violent. Labor costs people money. Which, is mentally taxing when people are not paid the money they deserve because of the abundance of quantity over quality.

A quote that I find interesting was the mention of England having a disadvantage of foreign trade. Hume’s states “The English feel some disadvantages in foreign trade by the high price of labor, which is part of the effect of the riches of their artisans as well as of the plenty of money” (139). This quote proves the claim of Hume’s political essays of being cruel irony due to England, during the 18th century, being one of the known countries to colonize other countries. For example, America. The assumption of England having better foreign trade due to the absurd land that they have, but turning out to be the opposite. It demonstrates the theme of Hume’s essays about the rich being indolent about labor and foreign trade, focusing on non-essentials.

The question I would want to present is the thought of why Hume’s political essays can apply to today’s world (specifically, in America)?
